We’re flying to California on Saturday to start the Pacific Coast Highway drive. While planning this trip, we decided to ‘wing’ a few days/nights to be flexible with weather and not be rushed anywhere.

Despite this carefree approach, I created a budget/itinerary/restaurant/winery spreadsheet to track our expenses and ideas. I CAN’T HELP IT.

Last night, old wise boyfriend said this: “It’s not that you have a problem winging things, it’s just that you REALLY enjoy planning.”

I am flying home first thing tomorrow morning (read: 6:00 a.m. flight) and I couldn’t be more excited.

Back in January, I knew this time of year would be busy. I had my grandpa’s 90th, my best friend’s wedding shower, and my sister’s high school graduation. All in Massachusetts, all about a week apart from each other.

I knew I’d be faced with some tough decisions, but then I got lucky. My granpda’s 90th birthday party and my friend’s shower were planned for the SAME DAY. In my hometown, at different times. It was meant to be!

So, I’m spending time with my sister tomorrow, celebrating my grandpa and Jenn on Saturday, and relaxing with my Mom on Sunday. This girl is happy :)

Spring Arrives

This past weekend was BEAUTIFUL in Raleigh. I was so happy for all the graduates and mommas!

I started my Friday by chopping off 10 inches of my hair for Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths. This is the 4th time I’ve donated, so I was surprisingly unemotional (I definitely cried/canceled my appointment the first time). I’m loving the new look!

With my freshly cut locks, I was ready for the strawberry fields!! We loaded up on some majorly red and sweet and perfect berries for just $10!

Interested? We went to Porter Farms on Ten-Ten Road in Raleigh.

We worked up a thirst in the field and quenched it with a trip to Raleigh Brewing Company. It was a great first visit, though they were out of the beer I wanted to try. Apparently described to taste like caramel and biscuits? Guess there’s always next time ;)

Saturday was spent watching Lincoln and celebrating a good friend’s birthday. I somehow ended up at Neptune’s for the third time in a month. That’s acceptable, right?

Sunday was cleaning, grocery shopping, reading, etc. I’ve got a 4-day work week before I head home on Friday. Make it a good one!

I called my grandpa during my lunch break to wish him a happy 90th (!!) birthday. His response?

“If I had known I would live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.”

I’d say he’s doing just fine. Can’t wait to celebrate with the family next weekend!

Wednesday night was an absolute delight. I got to see one of my favorite bands perform at a local and intimate venue: Band of Horses at The Ritz.

We got there early to catch the opening band - Futurebirds - who were AWESOME. Hailing from Athens, GA, I will certainly keep my eye on them.

Then, the main show. BOH exceeded all of my expectations and played a variety of songs from their four albums. We were so close I could literally feel the music in my bones. It was incredible.

Todd McLellan must have a lot of fun at his job.

How else to explain someone who meticulously dismantles, then painstakingly rearranges hundreds of tiny parts of machinery. And that’s before he throws everything into the air.

The Toronto-based commercial photographer was the kind of kid who always took things apart, including an entire 1985 Hyundai Pony in secondary school. He said that if an object interested him, it would soon be in pieces.

“I’ve always had a technical grounding trying to figure out how things work,” he said in a phone interview.

That fascination followed him into adulthood, when he decided to disassemble 50 design classics for his book Things Come Apart: A Teardown Manual for Modern Living. The objects range from modern “smart” technology to older things that he collected on the street and at thrift shops. He looked for objects that were outdated but still functioned.

“I remember thinking, ‘Wow, all this technology still works,’ ” he said.

To photograph the objects, he first tried conventional portraits but found the results “boring and stuffy.” Eventually he decided to take the objects completely apart and lay out all of the pieces on a white backdrop.
